A new Leadership Academy has opened in Barrow to provide world-class training for those designing and building the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.
The 1,500-square metre facility, funded by the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), will accommodate more than 200 learners at a time and aims to deliver over 4,000 training places annually. Located at Harding Rise, the academy includes 15 learning spaces, six coaching pods and two team development zones.
The academy is designed to provide practical and bespoke training in modern leadership practices tailored to the demands of BAE Systems’ submarine programmes.
“In an increasingly complex and dynamic global environment, the role of effective leadership has never been more critical. Investing in our leaders is investing in our future – our new Leadership Academy will pay dividends both now and for generations to come,” said Steve Timms, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Submarines business.
Tania Gandamihardja, Group Human Resources Director, described the site visit as inspiring. “It was amazing to visit the Submarines Leadership Academy. The sense of pride and professionalism was evident and this sends a strong signal about the importance of leading our people to deliver our national endeavour. Thank you to all who have turned a vision into reality.”
The new centre adds to BAE Systems’ growing education and training infrastructure in Barrow. The Submarines Academy for Skills and Knowledge (SASK), opened in 2018, already provides extensive training to apprentices, graduates and the wider workforce.
Other initiatives include the transformation of BAE’s Portland Walk site into an experiential learning facility where trainees can practise skills before entering the workplace. The company has also supported the development of the University of Cumbria’s new campus adjacent to the SASK, which is set to open in September.
Maybe RR might find it easier to get that little help in the Barrow for their welding facility.
