QinetiQ US has secured approximately $26 million in subcontracts from General Dynamics Electric Boat to supply advanced electrical and electromechanical systems for the U.S. Navy’s Virginia and Columbia class submarine programmes, according to a company announcement issued on 29 July.

The multi-year agreement will see QinetiQ build, test, and deliver complex components that support critical onboard functions across both submarine classes. All production will be carried out at QinetiQ’s U.S.-based manufacturing facilities, with deliveries scheduled across the contract’s period of performance.

“These awards highlight Electric Boat’s confidence in QinetiQ’s engineering expertise, manufacturing capability and our role within the Navy submarine industrial base to deliver mission-critical systems for the nation’s fleet,” said Tom Vecchiolla, President and Chief Executive of QinetiQ US. “Our technical solutions support enhanced operational capabilities for these advanced submarines, enabling the U.S. Navy’s undersea dominance.”

The Virginia class is the U.S. Navy’s latest nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, capable of operating in both littoral and deep-sea environments. The Columbia class will replace the ageing Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines and serve as the backbone of the U.S. sea-based nuclear deterrent well into the 21st century.

QinetiQ’s subcontracted work will involve key systems that contribute to platform survivability, sensor integration, and onboard power distribution. While the specific components were not detailed, the company described them as essential to performance and mission effectiveness.

  1. So the US part of QinetQ has won a USN contract to support their Submarine programme, that’s what it’s supposed to do. Which is great news for their shareholders, just a shame that HMG sold ours off in 2008 for £254 million.

      • Hi M8, Happy Sunday. I may be just be about to stop being interested in U.K Defence as it’s a lost cause. Yesterday my dear wife dragged me along to another fine Derby Manufacturer for a Railway event. Alstom hosted “The Greatest Gathering” OMG 10am they open and decided to wake the whole city up “whistle up” from nearly 200 hundred Engines !
It’s a much over used expression by people who denigrate its meaning but it was genuinely “World Class” .

I may buy myself an Anorak, Woolley hat and little notepad !🤣

        • Blimey.
          Not you too mate.
Enough of my work colleagues are already lost!
