A new cross-party forum aimed at strengthening discussion of security and defence issues in Scotland has been launched, bringing together politicians, industry, academia and policy specialists.
The Scottish Security Dialogue, led by Regent Park Strategies in partnership with the Scottish Council on Global Affairs, is intended to provide a structured space for discussion of issues that sit across both devolved and reserved responsibilities.

The initiative is designed to convene Members of the Scottish Parliament alongside defence and security practitioners, with a focus on areas where domestic policy intersects with wider geopolitical pressures. These include energy security, cyber threats, critical infrastructure, and economic resilience.
While foreign and defence policy remain reserved to Westminster, the organisers argue that developments in the international security environment are increasingly shaping decisions taken at Holyrood.
The forum will be led by Stewart McDonald, a former MP and defence spokesperson, alongside Stuart Nicolson, a former Scottish Government communications chief. Broadcast journalist Bernard Ponsonby is set to chair discussions.
According to its prospectus, the Dialogue will focus on a range of themes including Scotland’s defence industrial base, the security of subsea infrastructure, activity in the High North, and what it describes as “the grey zone below the threshold of war”.
The programme is expected to operate through regular roundtables and briefings, with participation from political, industrial and academic stakeholders. It is structured as an ongoing forum rather than a one-off event series.

Totally irrelevant, defence is reserved for Westminster. Just yet another publicly funded talking shop for politicians to grandstand in.
I’m inclined to agree, Holyrood has its own problems to worry about, if defence industries need government assistance then the Scottish government should treat them no differently than any other manufacturing business, if they need special treatment then it’s up to the MoD to provide it.
That last thing we need is John Swinney grandstanding on the world stage like his predecessors.
Indeed I think his recent “popularity” in Scotland has been because he does tend to veer away for international issues that he has no competence over.
