A 19-year-old man from Birmingham, Shaan Farooq, has been found guilty of terrorism offences after distributing extremist material linked to the banned terrorist group, Islamic State.

Farooq, from Saltley, was convicted on 8 November 2024 at Birmingham Crown Court for three counts of intentionally distributing terrorism material. He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing terrorism material between May and July 2022.

According to Counter Terrorism Policing, the investigation began after a search of Farooq’s home on 11 July 2022, where detectives discovered a phone, laptop, tablet, and iPad containing material promoting Islamic State.

“This discovery revealed Farooq’s intent to encourage terrorism by distributing extremist content,” the police statement said.

Farooq was arrested in August 2022, alongside his friend, Amir El-Harith, also from Birmingham, who was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. El-Harith, 20, was sentenced earlier this year to six and a half years for disseminating terrorist publications and other related charges.

He was found guilty of sending videos via social media platforms, including Instagram, to encourage others to commit acts of terrorism.

The investigation has highlighted the ongoing issue of extremist material being distributed online, with Farooq’s actions serving as another reminder of the risks posed by individuals spreading harmful ideologies. “Farooq’s case reinforces the importance of the public’s role in helping to tackle terrorism,” said a spokesperson from Counter Terrorism Policing. “Reporting such material is vital in preventing the spread of extremism and in saving lives.”

Farooq has been remanded in custody, and his sentencing will take place on 11 December 2024 at Birmingham Crown Court.

  1. What do these misguided fools hope to achieve here in the UK ?

Do they think that if they commit enough acts of violence all the non-Muslims will run to the nearest mosque and convert?

Or is it a slow campaign of attrition? i.e kill enough unbelievers so you can become a majority?

Or to commit enough acts of violence to foment distrust and hate, so there is never any trust or integration between communities? I think they have already achieved that one.
