The skyline over Edinburgh Castle is set to be illuminated as an array of Royal Air Force aircraft are to participate in a series of stunning flypasts.

The shows will feature different aircraft from RAF bases, including Lossiemouth and Brize Norton.

The flypasts are part of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an annual event that takes place in August as part of the Edinburgh Festivals. This event features performances by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands, and artistic performance teams.

The venue for this event is the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. The upcoming flypasts, showcasing various aircraft from RAF squadrons, are an integral part of the event.

The Schedule

  • Wednesday, 9th August The opening event of the air extravaganza will start at 9:30 PM. Viewers will have a chance to witness a grand spectacle featuring two Typhoon jets from the 2 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth, accompanied by an A400 from RAF Brize Norton.
  • Saturday, 12th August A double treat awaits spectators this day. At 6:15 PM, the RAF Acrobatic Team, known as the Red Arrows, will grace the skies with their airborne acrobatics. The evening continues with an encore at 9:30 PM, featuring two Typhoons from the 1 (Fighter) Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth, alongside an A400 from RAF Brize Norton.
  • Tuesday, 15th August The schedule takes a turn towards showcasing maritime patrol prowess. At 9:30 PM, spectators can marvel at the Poseidon (P8) Maritime Patrol Aircraft from 120 Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth.
  • Thursday, 17th August The Poseidon (P8) Maritime Patrol Aircraft returns for another display, highlighting its capabilities at 9:30 PM. The aircraft hails from 120 Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth.
  • Friday, 25th August The series of air shows culminates with a grand finale at 9:30 PM. Two Typhoons from the IX (Bomber) Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth, will light up the night skies.

Please note these events are dependent on weather conditions and operational requirements.

Well that’s my evening sorted. I wonder where will be the best place to stand if not at the tattoo.
I wonder what direction they are coming from? Up the royal mile or across the other way? Ooh

Is a nighttime aerial exhibition a tradition in the UK? 🤔 Confess never experiencing this in the US.

No such thing as night time in Scotland in August 😀,still light well after 10pm but it’s the military tattoo that’s held at night. They have military bands from all over the world come to demonstrate.

Last year we had the US Space Force who were fantastic.

No, it’s never happened before in my lifetime, and is normally illegal to fly such aircraft so close to a built up city

Presumably no negative consequences resulted from this plan (did attempt to refrain from using the term negative impact). 🤔😉

Sorry…it really does my head in when people refer to the Red Arrows as an acrobatic display team. AEROBATIC! They’re not doing back flips and cartwheels lol 😀

Greetings.
60 years ago, my father commanded the RAF PT Display team.
HE knew something about acrobatics.

As an aside, do any of you know what plans there are to replace the Red Arrows Hawks when they finally reach the end of the line? That time must now be close surely?

Thanks Daniele. You have had some mixed weather in Europe!! Down here they are talking about a looming El Nino event which might mean a failure in the start of our rainy season which normally gets cracking beginning of September!😬

https://aeralis.com/ Looks like the only contender. They’ve had some seed funding but no where near enough to plan any production. However when you read the CVs of their board and Leadership Team- someone’s got some confidence that this project will best fruit

I was at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on Saturday 5th August, we had a low fly past of an Atlas A400M to start the the show. The show was great, though it only lasted 1 hour 10 minutes, not the 90 minutes as advertised.

This is terrible, truly sadistic idea, to fly fighter jets super low over Edinburgh whilst Russia threatens UK airspace and the UK supplies Ukraine..
The sound of fighter planes making sonic booms low over the city is simply disgusting, super loud, frightening and alarming and completely unnecessary as a part of the festival.
