The German Customs Administration has officially commissioned the new 67-metre customs vessel “Rügen”, powered by mtu gas engines from Rolls-Royce, marking a key step in the modernisation of Germany’s customs fleet, according to a press release.
The Rügen, the largest vessel in the German customs fleet, was put into service on 18 March 2025 in Stralsund, northern Germany. It is the first of four new customs vessels equipped with mtu Series 4000 gas engines, providing both propulsion and onboard power. The ships are being built as part of a broader fleet upgrade for operations in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
The President of the Generalzolldirektion (German Customs Administration), Dr Armin Rolfink, highlighted the importance of the vessel’s commissioning.
“With the commissioning of the ‘Rügen’, we are setting an important milestone for the strengthening and, at the same time, sustainable modernisation of our customs fleet. This state-of-the-art customs vessel combines high performance with innovative and environmentally conscious technology, which will enable us to carry out our important customs duties at sea even more efficiently in the future.”
The Rügen is powered by four 16-cylinder mtu Series 4000 gas engines, each producing 1,492 kW, driving two controllable pitch propellers. Two additional mtu gas engines provide onboard power, making the vessel capable of operating in multiple propulsion modes:
- Gas-electric mode
- Gas-mechanical mode
- Booster mode, combining all four main engines with electric motors to achieve a maximum speed of 23 knots
Rolls-Royce is also equipping three additional 55-metre customs vessels, currently under construction at Peene-Werft shipyard in Wolgast, northern Germany. Each will be powered by three 16-cylinder mtu Series 4000 gas engines, with a ten percent power increase to 1,641 kW per engine, enabling a top speed of 26 knots.
