The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has awarded a £1.2 million contract to Oceaneering International Services Limited to provide operational training for pilots of the SALMO Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) fleet.
The contract, signed on 21 September 2024, is intended to train pilots to International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) standards, ensuring they meet industry-recognised qualifications for operating unmanned underwater vehicles.
The Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) team, which is part of the MOD Ships Domain, is responsible for delivering critical operational capabilities, including salvage, diving, marine robotics, and marine operations.
SALMO plays a key role in supporting both Ship Acquisition and Ship Support Operating Centres, ensuring the Royal Navy maintains essential underwater capabilities.
The training contract was awarded through a competitive procedure with negotiation, with four bids submitted, including two from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and one from an EU-based company. The MOD’s Defence Equipment and Support agency is managing the contract.
This training aims to improve pilot proficiency and standardise skills for personnel operating these systems in challenging maritime environments.
Oceaneering International Services Limited, based in Aberdeen, will deliver the training programme, which will be carried out in line with IMCA guidelines.
