The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is moving forward with plans to improve military housing, with a new Military Housing Strategy and the Defence Homes website set for launch later this year, according to responses provided by Al Carns, Minister for Veterans, in written parliamentary questions from James Cartlidge, Conservative MP for South Suffolk.
The Defence Homes website, designed to streamline military housing services, is expected to launch in Spring 2025. Alongside this, the Home Hub Portal will also be introduced in stages, initially to a closed user group of 200 to 300 families before being rolled out to all families by the end of the year, following adjustments based on user feedback.
“The target date for the launch of the Defence Homes Website is Spring 2025,” Carns confirmed. He also stated that “the Home Hub Portal will be launched this Spring to a closed user group… [with] Full Operating Capability to all families following at the end of the year, once actions following the closed user group testing have been completed.”
The Military Housing Strategy, currently under development, is planned for publication in Summer 2025. The strategy aims to enhance the standard of accommodation, improve energy efficiency, and modernise service family housing.
The MoD’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is also conducting a Year Three Review of the Future Defence Infrastructure Service Accommodation Contracts, which remains “on target to complete by Summer 2025.”
When asked about plans to introduce higher minimum energy efficiency standards for Service Family Accommodation by 2029, Carns stated that this would be included within the forthcoming Military Housing Strategy. However, no specific targets have yet been outlined.
“Work on a new Military Housing Strategy has begun, with plans for publication in Summer 2025. This will set out the Ministry of Defence’s intent for energy efficiency in Service Family Accommodation,” he said.
The MoD’s efforts to revamp military housing services and infrastructure come amid ongoing concerns about the condition of service accommodation. The forthcoming Defence Homes website and Home Hub Portal are expected to improve transparency and accessibility, while the new Military Housing Strategy will lay out long-term plans for upgrading accommodation and energy efficiency standards.
Further details on how these initiatives will be implemented will be provided as the strategy’s publication date approaches in Summer 2025.
