The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has disclosed the sources and values of steel used in British military shipbuilding over the past five years, revealing significant contributions from both European Union (EU) countries and the UK.

In response to a parliamentary question from Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi (Slough), the Minister of State for Defence, Maria Eagle, confirmed that steel procurement data for MOD shipbuilding projects is included in the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) steel public procurement return, published annually.

The latest available data covers the 2022-23 financial year.

Financial Year 2022-23

The Type 31 frigate programme sourced £41.85 million worth of steel from Finland and Spain, with an additional £1.31 million worth of UK-produced sections and pipes.

Meanwhile, the Type 26 frigate programme relied on £3.16 million worth of steel from eight EU nations, including Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, alongside £1.54 million of UK-sourced steel.

Previous Years’ Procurement

  • 2021-22: The Type 31 programme spent £43.6 million on plate, bulb bar, and sections, while the Type 26 programme used £465,498 of plate steel (origins not detailed).
  • 2020-21: The Type 31 programme procured £391,949 worth of structural steel and sections, while the Type 26 programme used £3.76 million worth of plate, sections, and sheet steel.
  • 2019-20: The Type 26 programme sourced £3.4 million worth of various steel grades (origins not specified).
  • 2018-19: No steel purchases were recorded for UK military shipbuilding.

Steel Procurement Transparency & Future Data

Minister Maria Eagle noted that the DBT has refined its reporting since 2017-18, leading to more detailed records, particularly in 2022-23 when steel origins were specified for the first time. However, she confirmed that data for the 2023-24 financial year has not yet been published.

  2. I still never understand this fascination with Iron alloy, why does no one care where the aluminium came from or the iron ore used to make the steel in the first place. Why does anyone think being self sufficient in steel is a useful thing.

    • I just received $6618 working off my Iaptop this month. And if you think that’s cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made 0ver $15781 her first m0nth. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less.

    • Jim, whilst you and I can jump on a plane and travel about 98% of what we trade goes by sea and we are totally reliant on undersea infrastructure and food imports to maintain our way of life.
Britain’s economic prosperity and its wellbeing are therefore dependent on freedom of the sea.
To distill to its simplest form this means we need a merchant navy as well as the RN to trade and defend our island.
We use to use oak and elm, then iron and finally steel. For about the last 45 years we have pretended none of this really matters but in all our history we are the outliers that somehow know better.
Heaven help us if we have to find out why steel making and building ships is important. Out of touch doesn’t do it justice.
