BAE Systems Surface Ships in Portsmouth has been awarded a £53m contract to support submarine motion control systems.

The contract award notice describes the nature of the contract.

“In-service support (including technical knowledge, documentary support and the provision and integration of critical spares and repairs) and recapitalisation of complex hydraulic systems in respect of the submarine motion control systems (including one and two man control systems, the Hover and Missile Compensation System, the Autopilot and Digital Depth) on board the Vanguard and Trafalgar Class Submarines.”

These systems are required to keep the submarine stable during operations.

In addition, a contract was recently placed with Australian firm PMB Defence Engineering to improve the main battery module designs onboard British nuclear submarines. The £22.3m contract has been awarded for ‘Submarine Main Battery TDP Phase 3a – Final Module Design’.

“Submarine Main Battery TDP Phase 3a – Final Module Design is to develop and improve an existing Nickel- Zinc (NiZn) Submarine main battery module design inclusive of initial production standard module build, shock testing and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) pre-qualification.”

    • The autopilot and DD are common to both classes. Talent and Triumph are needed until the last A boat is operational in 2026.
