WATCH: Destroyer shoots down ballistic missile off Scottish coast

2

USS Ross destroyed a ballistic missile as part of the ‘Maritime Theater Missile Defense’ at sea demonstration off the Scottish coast.

The US Navy have released a video showing a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IA missile launching from the deck of Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Ross.

The missile successfully intercepted a Terrier Oriole ballistic missile fired from the Hebrides Range in Scotland.

Naval vessels from nine countries worked together to simultaneously intercept dummy ballistic and cruise missiles off the coast of Scotland.

The test involved ships from the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The Terrier Oriole is an unguided two-stage rocket system used to test ballistic missile defence systems, under the name Aegis Readiness Assessment Vehicle-B.

There are frequent incursions in Gibraltar from Spanish vessels and the UK’s response is to invite them over to Scotland for exercises…

Terrific if expensive missile ($10m a pop).

Needless to say, the UK should have gone with the Standard family of missiles rather than the dead end Asters.
