10

We were sent a video of HMS Daring firing an Aster missile, enjoy.

This class of ship, the Type 45 Destroyer, carriers a range of Aster missiles. The system is known as the Sea Viper air defence system and the ship carries a 48-cell Sylver A50 launcher, for a mix of up to 48 missiles, including Aster 15 missiles (range 1.7–30 km) and Aster 30 missiles (range 3–120 km).

Why is each side blurred out?

Blokes either side with fire extinguishers putting out the fires Daniele!

I would still like to see the Astor 15’s landed and replaced with quad packed Seaceptor, a mix of up to 96 missiles.

Astor 15 might have an edge over Seaceptor, but 4 for 1 has an edge all of its own!

It’s because it was taken on a mobile phone. Apparently most people take videos on their phones in vertical, or portrait, aspect. Without going into technicalities, this aspect doesn’t fit in well with a TV screen and leaves blank sides. So producers fill the edges with blurry images. Best to take videos on your phone in ‘landscape’ or horizontal aspect – you get more in the frame that way.

I do wonder why the RN doesn’t update the current Aster stock to NT level and use SeaCeptor as an Aster 15 replacement. If we did this we could quad pack seaceptor in 12 silos and increase what is already a very goods ships defences and capabilities.

Also the Sea Ceptor makes a lot less smoke than the Aster as it’s gas ejected out of the VLS slot.
Wouldn’t like to be breathing all those fumes after Aster goes off.

Sea Ceptor is less capable against challenging targets so ASTER 15 should stay to provide high end local defence against high supersonic/hypersonic manoeuvring ASM. However the extra 12 VLS should be fitted to increase the T45 missile numbers. I would also add an additional CIWS such as SeaRAM on the hanger roof to give another line of defence. After all we only have 6 of these ships so protecting them is key.
