In a recent training exercise in the Pacific, Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessels Lyme Bay and Argus conducted flying operations with Royal Navy helicopters.

The exercise involved seamless coordination of Merlin helicopters from 845 Naval Air Squadron, which were embarked on RFA Argus.

RFA Lyme Bay is a Bay-class landing ship dock operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), supporting the Royal Navy. Launched in 2007, she is one of four ships in her class (three in UK service), designed to provide vital amphibious support. RFA Lyme Bay is equipped with a well dock, allowing her to launch landing craft and other amphibious vehicles directly from the ship.

She has ample space for troops, vehicles, and supplies, making her a key asset for transporting resources to shore during military operations and disaster relief missions.

RFA Argus, meanwhile, is a truly unique ship in the RFA fleet, serving as a Primary Casualty Receiving Ship (PCRS). Originally built as a container ship in 1981, she was converted into a combined helicopter carrier and hospital ship in 1988. RFA Argus boasts a fully equipped hospital on board, complete with operating theatres, intensive care units, and other medical facilities.

This makes her indispensable in providing advanced medical care during military engagements or humanitarian crises. Additionally, her capacity to carry helicopters allows her to play a crucial role in medical evacuations and disaster response.

Together, RFA Lyme Bay and RFA Argus are vital components of the Royal Navy’s operational capabilities. RFA Lyme Bay excels in amphibious and logistical operations, while RFA Argus offers essential medical support and aviation capabilities.

These ships highlight the flexibility and multi-purpose nature of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, enabling the Royal Navy to respond effectively to a wide range of missions, from combat operations to delivering humanitarian aid.
