The Royal Navy has played a crucial role in a large-scale NATO training exercise led by the U.S. Navy.
The exercise, known as the Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPTUEX), took place in the Atlantic Ocean and involved a series of complex, multi-domain scenarios designed to prepare naval forces for global deployment.
The training event was headed by Vice Adm. Doug Perry, Commander of U.S. Second Fleet and Joint Force Command – Norfolk.
The exercise is part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group’s (HSTCSG) final pre-deployment certification, marking the tenth NATO-focused scenario conducted by Carrier Strike Group 4 (CSG-4) since 2020. This, say the U.S. Navy, provided a vital opportunity for both U.S. and Royal Navy personnel to test and refine their operational effectiveness, ensuring they can operate seamlessly within the NATO alliance.
“This was an outstanding opportunity to command-and-control Allied forces, to assess our staff’s strengths and weaknesses as a maritime headquarters, and to continuously improve our effectiveness as a team,” said Vice Adm. Perry.
Rear Adm. Max McCoy, Commander of CSG-4, stated, “Our ability to integrate within the Joint force alongside Allies and partners is a powerful force multiplier that elevates naval task force capabilities.”
The NATO scenario was one of the most complex components of the COMPTUEX, involving a range of advanced naval manoeuvres and strategic operations. The Italian Navy’s Carlo Bergamini-class frigate ITS Carabiniere also participated, showcasing the interoperability and cooperation among NATO members.
“Working side-by-side with an Allied force is very motivating, especially with a U.S. carrier strike group – the highest expression of power projection in the world,” commented Cmdr. Marco Felici, commanding officer of ITS Carabiniere.
Rear Adm. Sean Bailey, Commander of Carrier Strike Group 8, spoke of the value of these joint operations, noting that they provide a unique opportunity to hone and enhance the skills of mariners and warfighters within the NATO alliance. “The integration of these maritime countries represents another chance to hone and enhance our skills as mariners and warfighters within the NATO Alliance,” he said.
No mention of a ship, personnel only then?

Goodness knows. Another round of cuts and we’ll be looking at row boats as my Dad used to say and we had about 150 ships when he called it a day.🙄
According to the USN, “a recent Fleet Synthetic Training event with the U.K. Strike Force”.
That is not what this was. This a COMPUTEX which the US Navy uses as a pre-deployment exercise before final deployment. During this COMPUTEX, the Truman engaged in a training scenario in which it served as a NATO maritime component commander. A Fleet synthetic training exercise is something entirely different.
There is no mention of any Royal Navy participation in the Truman COMPUTEX, nor would one expect to see any. I think the headline is misleading.

There was us looking for RN Ships after seeing that the Italian ship ITS Carabiniere also took part. Very confusing.
