An RAF P-8 Poseidon aircraft was swiftly deployed today in response to a mid-afternoon collision between a tanker and a fishing boat in the Firth of Clyde.

The incident, which occurred around 3 PM between Ardrossan and Arran, prompted an extensive emergency operation.

HM Coastguard coordinated the deployment of helicopters from Inverness and Stornoway and RNLI lifeboats from Troon and Arran, as they rushed to the aid of the stricken vessels.

Additionally, CalMac has reported delays in their ferry service, notably affecting the MV Isle of Arran, which assisted with the emergency.

The aircraft, more generally known for its sophisticated surveillance features, was tracked circling the area, likely coordinating with surface rescue teams and providing critical aerial support. The aircraft is capable of deploying rescue equipment if required.

A Coastguard spokesperson confirmed, “HM Coastguard is coordinating the response to reports of a vessel collision on the Firth of Clyde this afternoon, April 25.”

Details about the collision’s cause or any casualties are still pending as the initial rescue efforts conclude.

  1. The fishing vessel was sunk and the oil tanker is currently being taken to Fairlie ocean terminal instead of its destination of Finnart oil terminal.
