In an era rife with rapid information exchange, fact and fiction can often become entangled. A recent claim by former Member of Parliament, Matthew Gordon-Banks, is drawing attention online.

He propagated a theory suggesting that missiles were launched from Romanian territory against Russian Air Forces.

This claim, while initially emerging from Russian bloggers, has stirred controversy and could potentially escalate the tense situation between Russia and NATO if left unchecked. Many figures, including Mr. Gordon-Banks, have found it worth discussing, and our intention is to further explore and understand the basis of these claims.

Understanding the Claim

The claim was made here.

And here.

The assertion made by Gordon-Banks implies that NATO has engaged in offensive actions against Russia. It’s essential to note that the source of Gordon-Banks’ claims does not have any supporting evidence that myself or my team can find.

Russian bloggers contend that Ukraine must be conducting missions from NATO bases in Romania because Russian cruise missiles have supposedly destroyed all of Ukraine’s airfields and their Storm Shadow missiles. These allegations are made despite satellite imagery suggesting otherwise.

Verifying the Facts

Any claim of such gravity necessitates rigorous examination. It demands consultation with multiple resources, including official government and NATO statements, interviews with military experts, independent news sources, and satellite imagery.

I have spoken to numerous Open Source Intelligence analysts, and the response was unanimous. It’s nonsense. So far, no credible evidence or official reports support Gordon-Banks’ claim or those made by Russian bloggers.

Neither NATO nor Romanian officials have reported any military actions against Russia from Romania’s territory. Similarly, Russian authorities have not reported any Romanian territory-origin missile strikes on their Air Force. Moreover, I am told that satellite imagery contradicts the bloggers’ narrative.

When I contacted Gordon-Banks about the claim, he said:

“Currently, currently, what I have said is not being publicly acknowledged by either the US or Russia. The US, has concerns about Polish & Lithuanian pressure. Russia wishes to avoid further domestic and military pressure to increase the tempo of its military action.

My comments about British direct ‘on the ground & air’ involvement in Ukraine, authorised in a manner where Parliament cannot have oversight, even if it was sitting, is unassailable. The Journal is at its best when highlighting Defence Equipment & training.

Are you going to tell your Followers that hundreds of British service and other personnel and other NATO personnel are not directly involved ‘other ground/air’ in the conflict in Ukraine? Of course you are not. End.”

The Danger of Disinformation

Disinformation is a potent tool capable of exacerbating conflicts, damaging reputations, and fostering widespread misunderstanding. The allegations by Gordon-Banks, whether intentional or not, could inflame unnecessary panic and lead to an escalation of conflict. While we aim to clarify the facts surrounding Mr. Gordon-Banks’ claims, it’s essential to understand that the intention of presenting different perspectives is not to imply any deliberate dissemination of misinformation on his part.

In our information-laden era, it’s vital for all, including writers, politicians, and the general public, to critically assess claims and ensure they are rooted in fact. Mr. Gordon-Banks, as a public figure, no doubt understands the weight of his words and the significance of the sources he cites.

As it stands, the allegations about missile launches from Romania against the Russian Air Force remain unsubstantiated. It’s doubtful Gordon-Banks is purposefully spreading disinformation, but this incident does make clear the need to evaluate what is being published online.

As part of our commitment to fair and balanced reporting, we have given Mr. Gordon-Banks an opportunity to respond to these allegations, which he did in the quote included above. The ultimate objective here is not to accuse or exonerate but to critically examine information and engage in a discourse that serves the truth. We also remind our readers that the situation in question is fluid and subject to changes as more evidence may come to light.

This is our understanding based on the facts available at the time of publishing.

The man’s biography makes for some interesting reading. To put it bluntly, any loon can post any outlandish claim on the internet and it’s neither practical or worthwhile to be trying to challenge all of them. I don’t see why the fact that the loon in question is a former MP would be deemed to give his views any greater weight either.

All the information in the public domain flatly contradicts his claims, including from Russian mil bloggers. One has to wonder whether he is being paid for his opinions, or whether he is missing the oxygen of publicity he had when he was an MP.

Ahh yes, a great keeper… If only he’d been well enough to play in the 1970 World Cup quarter final against West Germany. It was a brilliant England team, with superstars from back to front, not least Banks, he was such a gentleman and an absolute one-off. RIP Gordon.

In 2004, Gordon-Banks switched party allegiance to the Liberal Democrats, joining the party’s Executive Committee in Moray, Scotland.[6][7] Gordon-Banks was suspended from the Liberal Democrats in 2016 after an antisemitic Twitter tweet: “Farron’s leadership campaign was organised and funded by London Jews”. Marie van der Zyl, Vice President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said, “The comments by Matthew Gordon Banks on Twitter are of very deep concern. He talks about Jews and money and hints at the age-old canard of the ‘Jewish conspiracy’. He must urgently clarify and apologise for his comments, otherwise, we would expect the Liberal Democrat Party to invoke disciplinary procedures”.[1][8] – Wikipedia Clearly… Read more »

Well, he is an ex army officer and was a research fellow at the United Kingdom Defence academy. Can’t speak as to whether he is right in what he says but he isnt some typical internet rando with no relevant experience in the military, defence industry or defence studies like your average commentator.

Romania has not been attacked has it? Romania has not invoked article 5? Nothing to do with NATO then. Despite what Russia says it know perfectly well that NATO is a defensive alliance & it knows NATO countries are staying out of direct involvement in this “military operation”. That is what it is banking on. Not sure some guy making stuff up, which appears to be the case here, is relevant. Surely if Russia wanted to attack Romania it would simply attack and invent a pretext later. Not sure Russia would like the response though.

The single biggest problem getting anything done about defence in this country is that 90 per cent (?) of our MP’s don’t know anything and compared to who is on some reality TV programme the electorate don’t care.

Theres a heap load of pro Russian misinformation doing the rounds at the moment there is the video of Ukrainians surrending on mass to the Russians (Turned out it was a video of a prisoner exchange between Wagner and the Ukrainians in Bahkmut.) There was the story over the weekend that the Ukrainians had hit Donetsk city with Cluster muntions (funny enough there were no supporting videos or photos) and I came across this article (written by Anonymous on the Conservative Woman blog site. One such claim is this: “”Since Putin’s invasion in February 2022, Washington has attempted to use Ukrainian resistance as a vehicle for inflicting long-term military-strategic damage on Russia. In April last year, US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, stated openly that the guiding purpose behind US policy has been to ‘neuter the Russian army and navy for [the] next decade’. Such ambitious objectives explain why Boris Johnson, acting in tandem with Washington, urged Volodymyr Zelensky in March 2022 to dismiss Putin’s offers of negotiation.”” And here is what US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, actually stated: “”Lloyd Austin III, the… Read more »

As for Washington and Boris getting the Ukraine to walk away from peace talks. That last Russian /Ukr peace talks were held in turkey between the 29th and 30th of March. But after over 450 people were found murdered on the streets of Bucha on the 1st of April, the Ukraine ended all dealings with Moscow. Boris didnt arrive in the Ukraine until the 9th April.

Are you sure of those dates
Wikipedia says
The first meeting was held four days after the start of the invasion, on 28 February 2022, in Belarus. It concluded without result, with delegations from both sides returning to their capitals for consultations.[1] A second and third round of talks took place on 3[2] and 7 March 2022,[3] on the Belarus–Ukraine border, in an undisclosed location in the Gomel region of Belarus.[4] A fourth and fifth round of talks were respectively held on 10 and 14 March in Antalya, Turkey”

The talks in Turkey were clearly before Johnson arrived suddenly in Kyiv

I follow Ukranian Pravda and still plenty of imagery of Destruction of Russian equipment. That said there is a fair amount less detailed coverage of events and supporting imagery since the beginning of the Counter Offensive which I suspect is no coincidence and has much to do with preventing stuff useful to the enemy entering the social networks. However plenty of images of damage from unspecified weapons from the occupied territories have been released one being damage to the two bridges probably from StormShadow taken a day or so after Russia launched attacks on the airfield that they supposedly fly… Read more »

He certainly does come across as shall we say eccentric. He irrationally claims his comment are unavailable yet his comments, those that can even be deciphered anyway, are mere personal accusations with no actual factual evidence whatsoever. In similar style I could claim that aliens are amongst us and my comments are unassailable, but what would it mean other than prove me wrong which one can’t as you can’t disprove a negative. It’s the language of self serving charlatans and snake oil salesmen, wanting to make themselves seem important or it’s otherwise indicative of someone with serious mental health issues… Read more »

If Russia claim a Storm Shadow hit a target in Russia, and they claim it came from an RAF Typhoon operating out of Poland, not an Su-24 from Ukraine, how would NATO prove otherwise? Also what is the difference, NATO would be the enablers of either situation anyway, the weapon and target would be the same. The information flow in the fog of war can lead to disastrous consequences when dealing with a nuclear armed state.

No one wants a nuclear war, end of.

Russia also does not want NATO forces in a conventional sense being directly involved in Ukraine, air superiority would be gained within hours leading to the occupying ground forces being mopped up very quickly.

It’s generally accepted that the burden of proof lays with the person making the accusation. The RAF cannot prove a negative short of having a time stamped arial photograph of the entire Typhoon fleet lined up on a runway.

“Ex-MP stirs storm with NATO missile claims”

Normally I despise the sort of pejorative headlines often seen in tabloids but in this case, given the guy’s expulsion from the Lib Dem party due to antisemitic comments and his drink driving offences one involving a prison sentence, I think that in this case a simple single word addition to the start of the headline would have fitted the article better …

Hopefully he will be sanctioned by parliamentary standards. As an elected MP of our democratic parliament and ergo representing a constituency he really should know better then feed the Russian trolls.
His idiotic claim just puts fuel onto the fire of Russia’s narrative that they are fighting in Ukraine against an encroaching and hostile NATO which is obviously completely not true.
This MP is a disgrace, unfortunately though it’s sadly representative of the rot that has set into UK political standards.

Much as the Russians like to claim otherwise Storm Shadow is causing them serious problems. Hence their all out missile blitz attacks on the Su24 bases, which haven’t been successful either. I’m not aware of any evidence that a single Storm Shadow has been shot down, albeit one did crash more or less intact so it was most likely a dud. I suspect the Russian GBAD has a particular problem due to LO and the flight path of Storm Shadow, according to the Turks, the much vaunted S400 is useless against low altitude threats. These are not detected until it’s… Read more »

There is a reason ELINT ferrets are up all the time. Mapping emitters lets you plot surveillance and engagement envelops and identify blind spots with little coverage. With that information you could suggest to someone that they design the flight paths of say an LO cruise missile that they have to exploit these areas to ensure that it gets to the target.
